I naturally love dogs because I think they are loyal animals that make life better and more fun. I have had a lot of puppies in my home over the years and this means that house training is always part of bringing up the puppy into good housetrained dog.
I have found out that each breed is different and this means that you will need to get information about the puppy’s breed is as to make a strategic plan that will effectively train your puppy. Here are some steps that I have used and can guarantee that will be highly effective. I used many of them myself, and I also got some ideas from Tim of Stop That Dog, specifically his great article on puppy house training methods - it's a good read if you need more tips. :)
Always Start Inside
There are several methods of house training a puppy. The first step is placing papers or pretreated pads on the floor and encouraging your puppy to use this as their bathroom area. When I used the pads, I found them to be more effective when compared to plain paper. The pads will have some chemicals which attracts the puppy to use them when they need a bathroom break. I always watch my puppies for the bathroom pattern which includes sniffing the floor. When you see this, pick them up and take them to the bathroom spot.
As they start using the paper pad consistently, you can now start moving it towards the door and finally outside. The importance of this process is to concentrate their bathroom activities in one spot inside the house and then move it to one spot outside the house. My experience with this method is that since the puppy will be trained to relieve themselves in the house first, housebreaking them might take a little bit longer.
Crate Training
Having had multiple puppies, there is almost no method I have not used in puppy house training. Crate training involves a small crate or cage where the puppy should sleep and make their small haven. Since they would not want to soil their perfect place and sleep on the mess, they will learn how to control their bladder and bowel movements. You can place the puppy in the crate for a few hours while you are handling some house chores. Before you put the puppy in the crate, take him out in their favorite place so that they can relieve themselves. Crate training teaches your puppy that though there is an urge to relieve themselves they can hold it longer to keep their haven clean.
Supervision
For a puppy to be effectively house trained, they will need constant supervision. Spending a long time with the puppy when you can is effective in ensuring that you direct your puppy to where you want them. Always use consistent verbal cues such as ??potty’, ??do it’, and ??outside’ to encourage the puppy to relieve themselves on a particular spot. Always keep in mind that you will have to deal with accidents. You should never punish your puppy because they will not understand why they are being punished. Instead carry them to their potty spot outside. If they are in the process, pick them up and say a stern “No” without raising your voice and take them out. With time they will learn to go to their potty spot and your puppy house training will succeed.
